Super Bowl 2013 Countdown

When you are deciding in to take pleasure in the Super Bowl on Monday early morning, spare a thought for San Francisco 49ers back-up qb Alex Smith.

Much less than 3 months ago, Smith was getting the time of his life, actively playing much better than he ever had just before and one of the likeliest competitors to be foremost his side to the Super Bowl XLVII.

With one of the finest passing records in the whole football league, he carefully guided the 49ers to a 6-2 record. Then on November 11, versus St Louis, he dealt with a concussion.

It did not look like a big deal at the time, a week or two off and he would be back again in business. Not so. His substitute, a 25-year-old inked dynamo known as Colin Kaepernick, got his chance to glow with both hands.

Kaepernick’s beginning NFL first appearance was a Monday evening match versus the Chicago Bears. The highlight couldn't have been any better - and he revelled in it. Alert of his popularity as an explosively fast going Quarterback, Chicago assumed they have been ready, but Kaepernick passed them to dying, with the 49ers winning 32-7.
